South Africa vs Pakistan Women T20 World Cup Preview & Tips
South Africa Women were not on the same level as Australia in their World Cup opener as they slumped to a heavy 65-run loss.
Pakistan Women were also easily beaten in their opener as India stormed to a 64-run win.
- Pakistan have lost three of their last four T20's against South Africa (W1)
- Laura Wolvaardt top scored with 44 for South Africa in their World Cup opener
Head To Head
South Africa have won five of their last 10 T20's against Pakistan with the latter winning the other five.
South Africa Women Form
South Africa Women knew they were right up against it in their World Cup opener as they took on the best team in women's cricket in the form of Australia.
However, they would have hoped to have pushed the tournament favourites far closer than they did as they were thumped in a 65-run loss. Restricting Australia to 172/8 saw South Africa fare well with the ball, but their antics with the bat will be a major worry as eight of their 11 batters returned single-figure scores.
As she so often does, Laura Wolvaardt led the charge for South Africa with a composed 44 from 39. The major issue for Wolvaardt was that Australia starved her of the strike, with their star batting having to watch multiple batting partners come and go. Ultimately, by the time she departed six short of a half-century, the score was at 96/5, with the final five wickets then falling for 11 runs in a monumental collapse.
Against Pakistan, the focus will be on building partnerships with the bat and not forcing Wolvaardt to do it all herself. If their best batter is given some real support then she will hurt Pakistan's bowlers with big score.
Pakistan Women Form
Pakistan Women were on top in their clash with India as they restricted their opponents to 18/2 after 3.2 overs. However, Smriti Mandhana did what she does best as she battled to 68 from 44, with this taking all of the momentum out of Pakistan's sails.
They also started well with the bat as they worked their way to 38 without loss after 4.4 overs in their chase of 171 to win. However, wickets began to tumble as they went from 38/0 to 79/6 before being bowled out for 106. While India are one of the best in the game for a reason, Pakistan's collapse will be a major worry as Muneeba Ali (41) scored just short of half of her team's runs.
While this is a more winnable game for Pakistan, they are still outmatched. South Africa are one of the top teams in the world, and I predict that they will cruise to victory.
Verdict
I am backing Laura Wolvaardt to go well with the bat as she leads South Africa to a crucial win over Pakistan.
