New Zealand vs South Africa T20 World Cup Preview & Tips
New Zealand are aiming to bounce back from their Super 8's loss to England in the perfect way, with a win over South Africa sending them into the World Cup final.
South Africa easily beat Zimbabwe in their last Super 8's game as they ensured they arrive for the semi-finals without tasting defeat at the competition in 2026.
- New Zealand have won three of their last four against South Africa in the shortest format
- Lungi Ngidi has taken four wickets across his last two matches for the Proteas
Head To Head
South Africa have won six of their last 10 matches against New Zealand in the T20 game, with the Black Caps winning the other four encounters.
New Zealand Form
Despite only winning one of their last three matches, New Zealand find themselves just two wins away from securing the men's T20 World Cup for the first time.
Their loss to England was a result that could have gone either way, with a late batting counterattack from the English seeing them over the line. The focus for New Zealand in their semi-final will be on trying to accelerate later on with the bat, while they need to go for the throat when they are on top with the ball.
South Africa will provide an explosive batting unit and an incisive bowling line-up similar to England's, meaning the Black Caps have had good practice heading into this one. Aiming to avenge their seven-wicket loss to the same opponent back in the group stage, I back New Zealand to reach the heights of their recent crushing 61-run win over Sri Lanka as they land a decisive blow on South Africa's world Cup hopes.
South Africa Form
South Africa have been the team to beat at the 2026 World Cup to this point, with the likes of New Zealand, India and the West Indies all falling to defeat against the Proteas.
Heading into their clash with Zimbabwe, South Africa knew they would be heading to the semi-finals regardless of the result. However, they still put in an impressive display with bat and ball as they stormed to a five-wicket win. While Zimbabwe struggled to reach the heights of their wins over Australia and Sri Lanka, they were never allowed to really get up to steam against the Proteas.
In their semi-final with New Zealand, South Africa are the favourites. They have won all seven of their World Cup games, while they beat the Black Caps in the group. However, the latter stages of the World Cup have rarely been South Africa's friend, with the men's side securing a single silver medal back in 2024.
With the tag of favourites likely to hang heavily around their necks, I am backing South Africa to slip to a stunning defeat despite seeing Lungi Ngidi continue to impress with the ball in hand.
Verdict
I am backing New Zealand to rally despite seeing Ngidi star with the ball as the Black Caps take their place in the World Cup final at the expense of their previously perfect opponents.
