England vs Pakistan 3rd Test Preview & Tips

England are good value for their 2-0 series lead over Pakistan after starring with the ball across a series in which no player has scored a century.

Pakistan are staring down the barrel of a 3-0 Test series loss that has been born out of poor batting, bowling and fielding.

Head To Head

England have notched six wins in their last 10 Tests against Pakistan, with the latter winning twice and two games ending as draws.

England Form

England have rallied well from their dismal 2-1 Test series loss to New Zealand, with Joe Root’s second stint in charge of his nation starting with a series win.

Across the series, batting has been something of an afterthought. With the exception of England’s score of 409, neither of the sides have gone beyond the 300-run mark in the other six innings to end.

With the ball so on top, batters averaging 50.00 in Tests are like gold dust, and that is exactly what Root is doing. Across the series he is at 31.33, but he averages 63.20 at Edgbaston in Tests, with the England captain superb. If England are to post a good score, he is my pick to impress with the bat.

As far as the result goes, Pakistan have done little to put England under real pressure. With the exception of their second innings in the second Test in which they were bundled out for 208, England have looked very comfortable. While Pakistan have made a number of changes to their squad, this will likely do little to stop them from sliding to a 3-0 series defeat.

Pakistan Form

Pakistan have been forced to stomach a real lesson in cricket from a side that is arguably outside of the true elite of the game right now.

England are someway behind the likes of India, Australia and South Africa in the Test game when it comes to consistency, and yet they have easily beaten Pakistan across their opening two Tests. Of course, playing in English conditions is a huge advantage, but Pakistan have done little to truly challenge England.

The return of Babar Azam failed to ignite Pakistan as he posted scores of eight and six. While he could do little to halt the collapse of his team, Pakistan will be desperate to see their best player get back to scoring runs.

However, in the battle between Babar and Root, the latter has the advantage. The ball will be hooping around if the conditions allow and this will challenge both the outside edge and the pads. With Pakistan likely to be under the pump from the start, I predict that Babar Azam will have to stomach his side losing their tour 3-0.
